3D Laser Scanning Microscopy
-
Laser scanning microscopes utilize laser illumination to create high-resolution, high-contrast 3D images of samples by scanning them point by point. Two common types of laser scanning microscopes are confocal laser scanning microscopes and multiphoton laser scanning microscopes.
The 3D aspect involves using a series of focal planes (movement in the z-axis) at a known interval of focus through a specimen that remains in a fixed position (no movement in the x-y axis). Since these images are in spatial registration, they provide a three-dimensional representation of the sample being examined.
